I just wanted to say that if people need help with their heating bill, they can go apply for LIHEAP. I wrote about this a few weeks ago on my blog: http://couponqueenofcorning.today.com/2008/11/06/states-now-accepting-heap-applications/

I have a family of 5 and we qualify for regular HEAP and my husband makes a little over $800 a week. It really is worth looking into and seeing if you qualify. Last year we received a one time HEAP benefit of $300 for our natural gas bill. If people do not have any money for oil or propane they may even qualify for emergency HEAP. There is a link on my page to LIHEAP.

By the way I have read a few articles so far and really like your blog.

Actually, your animals sound like a dream! The kids and I have spoken many times about having a farm and caring for animals. My youngest wants to create a dog sanctuary and adoption center when she is an adult.
I realize that's not the same as caring for farm animals, and the work probably doesn't match in comparison, but good for you for "living off the land' and living your own wonderful life!

BTW...the bartering, been there, done that...it got to be that I actually was in such need at one time that I would purposely find items at yard sales and purchase them just to barter because I knew it was something someone else wanted. From there, we began to sell items at the local flea markets on weekends. Hey, you do what you have to do to survive!
God Bless You~Momma http://savemoneymomma.today.com

It is so hard with kids, I do agree. My daughter think it is unfair that I make her buy her own stuff, she is going to be 18 in a couple of months. She does work a good part time job. Parents have gotten away from making there kids contribute to the family, after all they are a part of it. All of my kids do work around the home, and garden after all they live here to.

What this has done has made her wake up to what things cost. There is more to life than buying "cool" clothes. Today's cool clothes will be outdated a year from now. She also has to pay for her own car if she chooses to own one and all of the costs that go with it.

I don't understand how parents can give there kids i-pods, cars, gas, insurance, money to buy food in the cafeteria, they have to be running on borrowed money.

EXACTLY, debt is what got us here in the first place, how are we going to borrow ourselves out of debt? People need to get back in to learning how to save.

But it is hard, the people like us and our kids are made fun of because they don't have the "right clothes" live on the "right" side of town ect......

But I can live with what I have because I do not have to worry about any one taking it away, because it is paid for.

My husband and I use to go out into the woods near our home and dig up Golden Seal roots. Then we would take them home and lay them out to dry after shaking as much dirt off the roots as possible. Once they dried we would take them to the root market and sale them.

For those that think that this is beneath you, well losing our home is beneath us, not putting enough food on the table for our kids is beneath us. So do what you have to do to get the bills paid and ensure that your family is going to be alright. Listen to the blogger on this blog, she is offering you some great advice.

By the way we usually made $450 for three days of work. It was a lot of roots dug up but in only three days we usually had the money we needed.

I am bookmarking your blog, keep up with the great advice. Even though we are doing ok financially right now, my husband and I remember the tight times and we could have used some of your advice back then. So I am book marking so I can use it now so that we hopefully can be frugal enough to avoid the hard times again.

With 5 boys ranging from 10-3 this is great advice. I have one coming up at the beginning of Nov. Right after we recover from Halloween. He will be turning 7 so these tips will work out great. I know my boys will love the balloon stomp.

You sound like me. 5 kids, in college and writing on a blog here at Today.com and as well Associated Content. That sounds like my life.

I have loved writing for Associated Content as it has paid the bills during the months when my husband was struggling to get his business up and going. So here I am now writing a blog, writing for AC and hubby is finally doing great as a truck driver who owns his own truck.
